Karbala is laid out around two shrines. The shrine of Imam Husayn and the shrine of his half-brother Abbas stand a short distance apart in the centre of the old city, linked by the wide pedestrian space known as Bayn al-Haramayn, meaning between the two shrines. From above, the two walled compounds and the plaza between them form the clearest shape in the city.
Husayn was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680, and the city is one of the holiest in Shia Islam. Each year millions of pilgrims come for the Arbaeen commemoration, many walking from Najaf and other cities. Streets, roads and guest houses around the centre are planned with these large crowds in mind.
A Karbala map poster also shows the land around the city. To the east, date palm groves and fields watered by channels from the Euphrates surround the streets in green, while to the west the land opens into desert, with the wide lake of Razzaza beyond. The city stands right on the line where farmland meets dry country.

Roads circle the old city at several distances, and streets lead from them inward to the shrines, giving the centre a concentric, radial structure.
Palms and desert
Irrigated palm groves spread on the eastern side, while the western edge opens onto desert, drawing a sharp line between cultivated and open land.
