Kasāra sits where the lowlands of Thane district meet the Western Ghats. On a map the town is compact: a short spread of lanes gathered around the railway line and the main road, with forested slopes rising steeply to the east. Past the edge of town the roads bend again and again as they climb toward the plateau, which gives the sheet a clear sense of direction and height.
Many travellers know the name as the end of one branch of the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central line. It is the last stop before the ghat section that takes trains up toward Igatpuri. The highway between Mumbai and Nashik follows the same corridor, so road and rail run side by side through a narrow valley. They separate as each works its way up the hillside.
