Keru lies in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, a short distance west of the city of Jodhpur, where the land opens into the dry plains of the Thar Desert. On a map the settlement is a modest cluster of lanes and houses, surrounded by wide open ground marked by field boundaries, tracks and the occasional seasonal watercourse.
Rainfall here is low and uneven, and the landscape reflects it: farming follows the monsoon, fields are large and loosely defined, and villages sit at some distance from one another.
