Khatauli is a town in Muzaffarnagar district in western Uttar Pradesh, in the flat and fertile country of the upper Doab between the Ganga and the Yamuna. On a map its shape follows its transport lines: the main road between Delhi and Haridwar passes along the town, the railway runs nearby, and the older bazaar streets gather in a dense cluster between them.
The region is known for sugarcane, and Khatauli is home to one of India's largest sugar mills, a sizeable industrial compound on the edge of town. Nearby, the Upper Ganga Canal, one of the major irrigation works of the nineteenth century, carries water south through the district and shapes the pattern of fields around it.
