Khūy sits on a broad, fertile plain in West Azerbaijan province, not far from the Turkish border, with mountains visible on the horizon. On the map, the city is a compact mass of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields and orchards. The farmland makes it one of the clearest examples of a traditional Iranian oasis town viewed from above.
The old centre is a tight maze of lanes, with larger avenues cutting straight through it and newer districts laid out on a more regular grid around the edges. Khūy is linked with the poet Rumi through his teacher, Shams Tabrizi. A monument and minaret dedicated to Shams stand in the city.
