Kielce lies among the Świętokrzyskie Mountains in south-central Poland, and the landscape shows on its map. The city is not built on a flat plain. Streets wrap around limestone hills and former quarries, while the small Silnica river runs through the centre and feeds a string of ponds and parks. The result is a street plan broken up by green, irregular open spaces.
The historic core is centred on the seventeenth-century Palace of the Kraków Bishops. From there the pedestrian Sienkiewicza Street leads toward the station. Nearby, the Kadzielnia quarry has been turned into an amphitheatre and nature reserve, and its sheer walls stand inside the city. Karczówka hill, with its monastery, rises on the southwestern side.
