Kindu is the capital of Maniema province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It stands on the Lualaba River, the upper course of the Congo, which is broad here and dotted with sandbanks and islands. On a map the town stretches along the riverbank in a grid of streets, with its port and older quarters close to the water.
Kindu grew as a river and railway town. A rail line from the south ends here, linking the Lualaba to the network towards Katanga, and boats carry goods downstream towards Ubundu and Kisangani. The surrounding province is largely forested, with farmland and villages along the roads. The town is the main administrative and trading centre for a wide area.
