Kingston spreads across a plain that slopes gently from the foothills of the Blue Mountains down to one of the largest natural harbours in the world. On the map the harbour is the defining feature, enclosed by the Palisadoes, a long, narrow sandspit that carries the airport road and ends at Port Royal. The city fills the land between the water and the hills.
Downtown Kingston follows a regular grid laid out in 1692, after an earthquake destroyed much of Port Royal across the harbour. Further north the pattern loosens around Half Way Tree and New Kingston. On Hope Road stands the former home of Bob Marley, now a museum, and the land climbs steadily toward the mountains.
A Kingston map poster captures the capital's open geometry: the grid by the water, the looser streets uptown and the long curve of the Palisadoes. The harbour takes up much of the frame, a calm expanse against the dense city. It is Jamaica's capital drawn in essential lines.
