Kingston sits on the west bank of the Hudson River, roughly halfway between New York City and Albany. On a map the city reads as three distinct parts: the Uptown grid around the old Stockade District, the Midtown streets that link it southward, and the Rondout waterfront, where the creek bends into the Hudson and once carried canal traffic from the coal fields of Pennsylvania.
In 1777 Kingston became the first capital of New York State, and later that year British troops burned much of the town. Several stone houses from the Dutch and colonial era survived and still line the Uptown streets. The outline of the original stockade can be traced in the tight block pattern near the center, a small square of order inside the looser growth that came later.
A Kingston map poster captures that layered plan in clean black lines: the curve of the creek, the long reach of Broadway connecting Uptown to the river, and the open water of the Hudson along the eastern edge. To the west the street network thins into wooded slopes, a reminder that the Catskills begin just beyond the city limits.
