Kishaba lies in the central part of Okinawa Island, in Kitanakagusuku, on the ridge that runs between the island's two coasts. Its streets do not follow a grid. They bend with the contours, climbing and dropping around slopes and small valleys, so on the map the district appears as a web of curving lanes broken by patches of green.
This ridge has long been important ground. A short distance to the south stand the ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, one of the gusuku sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Ryukyu Kingdom. From the high ground the land falls away toward Nakagusuku Bay on the east, and the dense urban spread of central Okinawa fills the lowlands to the west.
