Köping is in Västmanland, at the western end of Lake Mälaren, where a long narrow bay reaches inland. On a map the town sits at the head of that water. The Köpingsån river runs down through the centre to the harbour, and the street grid is arranged on either side of it. Beyond, farmland and forest take over.
The town's position has shaped its economy. Being at the end of Mälaren made Köping a port, linking inland Västmanland to the lake's shipping routes and on to Stockholm. It also became an industrial town, with engineering and manufacturing concentrated around the harbour and rail line. The mix of docks, rail and residential streets is visible even at a small scale.
