Konnagar is a town in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, on the western bank of the Hooghly River, north of Howrah and Kolkata. From above, it is one link in a long chain of riverside towns. A narrow belt of dense streets and lanes runs parallel to the river, with the railway line on the inland side and more open ground beyond.
The riverfront is lined with ghats, the steps down to the water that are central to daily life and ritual along the Hooghly. Temples, older houses and small industrial sites stand near the bank. The railway station is a focal point for commuters travelling into Kolkata each day.
