Korba grew around coal. The town lies along the Hasdeo River in northern Chhattisgarh, and on a map its urban areas are interspersed with the pale, terraced footprints of open-cast mines and the large, regular compounds of thermal power stations. Rather than one dense core, the city is spread across several settlements linked by long roads and the railway lines that serve the collieries.
Planned townships for workers appear as tidy blocks of streets beside older bazaar areas with a looser pattern. Reservoirs, cooling ponds and ash dykes add unusual geometric shapes, and the river draws a winding line through it all.
