Kotelny is the largest of the New Siberian Islands. It lies between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. On a map it has almost no human lines at all. What shows instead is the land itself: a broad, low plateau, a coast of gentle curves and shallow lagoons, and river valleys branching across the tundra toward the sea.
To the east, the island merges with Bunge Land, a flat, sandy plain that connects it with Faddeyevsky Island, so the group can look like one large landmass. The interior has no real roads, and people are present only at a small military and research outpost. A Kotelny Island map poster is therefore closer to a coastline study than a street plan.
The New Siberian Islands are known for their frozen ground, which has preserved the remains of mammoths and other Ice Age animals.
