Kotri sits on the western bank of the Indus River in Sindh, directly across from the city of Hyderabad. On a map the river is the dominant feature: a wide band of water and sandbanks running north to south, with Kotri's streets pressed along the western shore and bridges linking the two banks.
Just north of the town lies the Kotri Barrage, one of the major water-control structures on the lower Indus, which feeds irrigation canals across southern Sindh. Those canals appear as long, straight lines leading away from the river, cutting through farmland and giving the surrounding map a strong, engineered geometry.
Kotri is also an industrial town and a rail junction, and the railway lines run through it towards the river crossings. A Kotri map poster shows how closely the town is tied to the Indus, from the barrage and canals to the bridges that connect it with Hyderabad.
