Kottayam sits in central Kerala, between the Western Ghats to the east and the backwaters to the west. The Meenachil River loops through the area, and to the west a network of canals and waterways leads toward Vembanad Lake. The street pattern is loose and organic, with roads following the gentle rises of the land and houses spread among trees and plantations.
Kottayam is known as the city of letters. It is closely tied to printing, publishing and newspapers in Malayalam, and it was the first town in India to reach full literacy. CMS College, founded in the early nineteenth century, is one of the oldest colleges in the country. The town is also a centre of the rubber trade, and the Rubber Board has its headquarters here.
