Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu state, stands where the Terengganu River reaches the South China Sea, and its name simply means the mouth of the Terengganu. On the map, the city wraps around a wide estuary scattered with islands, with the old town on the southern bank facing the river and the sea, and newer districts spreading along the coast and inland.
The waterfront holds the historic core: the Pasar Payang market, a short Chinatown street of old shophouses, and the Istana Maziah palace near the river. Across the estuary, Pulau Duyong has long been known for traditional wooden boatbuilding, and a drawbridge opened in 2019 now carries traffic across the river mouth close to the sea.
Upstream, on an island in the river, the Crystal Mosque, built of steel and glass, stands within a heritage park of mosque replicas. Old town waterfront
