Kurunegala Map Poster & Print
Kurunegala is the capital of Sri Lanka's North Western Province, set among large outcrops of bare granite that rise sharply above the city. The most famous is Ethagala, or Elephant Rock, whose rounded shape overlooks the centre. On a map the rocks appear as open, unbuilt masses around which the streets bend.
Beside the city lies Kurunegala Lake, a large reservoir that forms a calm, open shape at the edge of the urban area. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Kurunegala served as one of the royal capitals of the island, and today it is a busy regional centre and road junction.
A Kurunegala map poster shows a city shaped by its landscape: the lake, the rock outcrops and the roads that converge from across the province. The contrast between dense streets and the unbuilt rock forms makes this an unusually striking composition, with strong negative space at its heart.
