Kythnos is one of the western Cyclades, close to Attica and often overlooked on the way to larger islands. From above it is roughly oval but with a heavily indented coast, cut into many small coves with beaches at their heads. The interior is hilly and terraced, and the villages sit inland rather than on the water, joined by a small network of roads.
The two main villages are Chora, also called Messaria, and Dryopida, both clusters of white houses on high ground. Loutra, on the northeast coast, is known for its thermal springs. On the northwest side, the beach at Kolona forms a double-sided sandbar joining Kythnos to the islet of Agios Loukas, one of the best-known shapes in the Cyclades.
