La Ceiba stretches along the Caribbean coast of northern Honduras on a narrow coastal plain. The sea lies to the north, and the mountains of Pico Bonito National Park rise sharply just to the south. On a map the city appears as a long band of streets running parallel to the shore, with the Cangrejal River flowing out of the mountains along its eastern edge.
The town grew in the early twentieth century as a base for banana companies, which built railways, docks and a pier reaching into the sea. Today the grid near the old pier holds the commercial centre, and neighbourhoods extend along the coast in both directions. Ferries leave from a nearby terminal for Roatán and Utila, two of the Bay Islands offshore to the north.
Every May the city holds a large carnival that fills the streets around the centre. A La Ceiba map poster shows a quieter version of the place: shoreline, grid and river, with the mass of the mountains leaving a wide, unbroken space to the south. The composition works because of the contrast between the straight edge of the sea and the folded terrain inland.

The river comes down from the mountains and marks the eastern side of the city. Further upstream it is known for rapids that draw rafters and kayakers.
Pico Bonito
The national park rises steeply behind the city. Its forested slopes form a wide, calm area that makes the band of streets stand out.
