Labé lies in the Fouta Djallon highlands of central Guinea, at an altitude of around a thousand metres. From above, the town spreads across a rolling plateau. Streets follow ridges and dip into valleys, and main roads radiate out toward other highland towns. The pattern is irregular and organic, shaped more by terrain than by a planned grid.
It is the capital of the Labé Region and one of the principal towns of the Fouta Djallon, historically a centre of Fula culture and Islamic scholarship. The cooler highland climate and green landscape set it apart from Guinea's coast, and the wider plateau is the source of several major West African rivers.
