Lages is the largest city of the Serra Catarinense, the high plateau of inland Santa Catarina. It sits at nearly a thousand metres above sea level, and the terrain around it is a landscape of rolling hills, streams and open fields. On the map the city spreads unevenly over this ground, its central grid giving way to curving streets that follow the slopes and valleys.
The region is known for its cold winters, among the coldest in Brazil, and for its ranching tradition, with cattle country stretching across the plateau. Araucaria pines once covered much of the landscape and still appear in patches around the city. Lages celebrates the seeds of that tree, the pinhão, with a well-known annual festival that draws visitors from across the south.
