Lagny-sur-Marne sits on the left bank of the Marne in Seine-et-Marne, about thirty kilometres east of central Paris. The river is the defining feature of the map. It sweeps past the old town and separates it from Thorigny-sur-Marne on the opposite bank, with bridges linking the two. The medieval core is compact, with narrow streets leading up from the water.
Lagny grew up around a Benedictine abbey and was an important medieval fair town in the Champagne trade network. The abbey church of Notre-Dame-des-Ardents still stands in the centre.
