Lakewood, Washington, lies just south of Tacoma on the glacial plain of the South Puget Sound. Its name comes from its most obvious feature on a map: a series of lakes, including American Lake, Lake Steilacoom and Gravelly Lake, scattered across the city. Streets curve around the shorelines, and many homes face the water.
The street pattern is a patchwork. Older neighbourhoods have loose, curving roads around the lakes, while commercial areas along the main corridors have larger blocks and parking lots. Interstate 5 runs along the southeast, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, one of the largest military installations in the country, borders the city to the south.
