Landsberg am Lech is built on the east bank of the Lech, where the old town climbs a steep slope up from the river. On a map this makes a striking layout: a dense cluster of streets squeezed between the water and the hillside, with lanes stepping up to the medieval walls and towers. Across the river, newer districts spread over flatter ground in a looser, more open pattern.
The river is one of the town's signatures. The Lechwehr, a broad weir right beside the old town, crosses the channel as a pale band of falling water, and a mill stream runs alongside the houses. At the top of the slope stands the Bayertor, which is often counted among the finest late Gothic town gates in southern Germany.
The Hauptplatz sits at the centre of it all, a wide square lined with painted facades and the historic town hall. The baroque master Dominikus Zimmermann once served as the town's mayor. Stepped old town
Between the river and the eastern slope, lanes climb in tight, irregular steps toward the old walls. This is the densest and most intricate part of the drawing.
Bayertor and walls
Remains of the medieval fortifications trace the upper edge of the old town. The late Gothic Bayertor marks the historic route leading east out of Landsberg.
