Lantau Island lies west of Hong Kong Island and is the largest island in the territory. On a map its interior is dominated by high, steep terrain, with Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak rising above a coastline of bays, headlands and small inlets. Much of the island is protected country park.
The northern shore tells a different story. Hong Kong International Airport occupies the reclaimed platform of Chek Lap Kok just offshore, and the new town of Tung Chung spreads beside it. Bridges and road links connect north Lantau to the rest of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge reaches out across the estuary from nearby.
