Larvik lies on the coast of Vestfold in southern Norway, at the head of the Larviksfjord. To the north stretches Farris, a long lake that gives its name to a well-known Norwegian mineral water, and between the lake and the sea the town spreads over hills and valleys.
The town is also known for larvikite, a distinctive stone quarried nearby and used around the world. Larvik was the birthplace of explorer Thor Heyerdahl and home to boat designer Colin Archer, both closely tied to its maritime history.
