Lasem lies on the north coast of Central Java in Rembang regency. From above, it sits on flat coastal land between the Java Sea and the hills inland. The main coastal highway runs through it, a river flows through town toward the sea, and the older quarters form a dense pattern of streets and walled compounds on either side.
The town has long been called Little China. It was one of the early places where Chinese traders settled on Java, and old temples and courtyard houses with high walls still line its streets. Lasem is also known for its batik, which blends Javanese and Chinese motifs and often uses a characteristic deep red. That mixed heritage shows up in the town's form as well as its culture.
