Laventille occupies the hills immediately east of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. Unlike the regular grid of the city centre below, its streets climb and wind across steep slopes, following ridges and gullies so that the road pattern looks crowded and irregular from above, with many short lanes ending against the hillside.
The area holds a significant place in Caribbean culture. Laventille is closely associated with the early development of the steelpan, the instrument that grew out of Trinidad's Carnival traditions in the twentieth century. On the heights above the harbour stand the remains of Fort Picton, an old British fortification with long views over the city.
