Lawa lies in the north-west of Pakistani Punjab, in the dry upland country west of Talagang, not far from the Salt Range. It is a local centre for the surrounding villages. On a map it appears as a compact settlement with a dense core of lanes and houses, ringed by open land that roads and field tracks cross in long lines.
The land around the town is rain-fed and cut in places by seasonal streams and gullies, which shows even in a simple line drawing. Roads rarely run in straight grids.
