The coordinates for Le Roux fall in the Cape Winelands of the Western Cape, close to the head of the Franschhoek valley. This is mountain country. Steep ranges close in on several sides, and the valley floor between them is filled with vineyards, orchards and farm estates. On a map, the pattern of settlement follows the flat land and stops where the slopes begin.
Seen in black and white, the area has a loose, rural texture. Roads follow the valley and cross it, while farm tracks branch off to individual estates. The contour of the mountains is suggested by the sudden absence of streets. The name itself is a familiar Huguenot surname, a reminder of the French Protestant settlers who came to this valley in the late seventeenth century.

Wine farms and smallholdings are spread across the valley, each reached by its own track. Together they create a fine, irregular pattern very different from a town grid.
