Leek lies in the west of Groningen province, close to the Drenthe border. From above it follows the typical pattern of the northern Netherlands: long roads with houses along them, straight drainage ditches, and farmland divided into narrow strips. The village grew along these routes rather than around a single square, so its outline stretches out instead of forming a ring.
On the edge of the village is the Nienoord estate, a wooded park around a historic borg, the fortified manor house found across Groningen. On a map it reads as a dense patch of paths and ponds that stands out against the open fields around it. The estate houses the national carriage museum, a well-known destination in this part of the north.
