Levanger lies on the eastern shore of the Trondheimsfjord in Trøndelag, where fertile farmland slopes down to the water. The town centre is a compact grid of streets lined with wooden houses, laid out after a nineteenth-century fire. It is one of Norway's best-preserved wooden town centres. On the map, those regular blocks stand out between the shoreline and the rolling fields.
The fjord is a constant presence: the coast bends around the town, and a small harbour and the mouth of the Levanger river break the shoreline. The E6 highway and the Nordland railway run along the coastal strip. Levanger is also home to a campus of Nord University, adding modern buildings at the edge of the historic core.
