Lima is the seat of Allen County, on the flat glacial plain of northwest Ohio. Its downtown follows a regular grid centred on the public square around the Allen County Courthouse. From there, straight streets extend toward farmland in every direction, and Interstate 75 runs along the eastern side of the city.
The Ottawa River winds through the city, one of the few curves in an otherwise rectilinear plan. Lima grew quickly after oil was found nearby in the 1880s and became an industrial centre, home to the Lima Locomotive Works. Today the city's tank plant, which builds the Abrams, is one of its best-known employers.
A Lima map poster shows a classic Midwestern industrial city from above: a dense central grid, rail corridors crossing it and neighbourhoods that fade into the rectangular fields of Allen County. The river crosses the city in a series of gentle bends. It is the main natural line on the map and the one strong curve among otherwise straight streets.
