Limay sits on the left bank of the Seine in the Yvelines, directly across from Mantes-la-Jolie. The river is the defining line on the map. It bends broadly here, split by long islands, and two bridges carry roads over it and tie the two towns into a single riverside landscape.
Behind the old centre the ground rises into the chalk and limestone slopes above the valley, which were long quarried. Closer to the water are port facilities and industrial zones, laid out in larger blocks. The remains of Limay's old bridge are well known. Corot painted it in the nineteenth century, and a few of its arches still stand in the river. On the map, the old crossing and the modern bridges sit close together, a small record of how people have crossed the Seine here.
