Livny Map Poster & Print
Livny stands on the Sosna river in the Oryol region of central Russia. It was founded in the late sixteenth century as a fortress on Muscovy’s southern defensive line, one of several towns built to guard against raids from the steppe. The river still defines the town, looping through it and dividing it into districts on either bank.
Livny is widely known for the livenka, a distinctive type of accordion that took its name from the town and became part of Russian folk music. On a map, the older centre sits close to the river on higher ground, with streets arranged in a loose grid. Bridges connect the two sides, and residential areas extend across the flatter land beyond.
A Livny map poster brings together the curves of the Sosna and the straighter streets of the town. The river gives the composition its main line, bending in wide arcs, while the blocks on either side show how the town grew outward from its fortress origins. It is a quiet, well-balanced map of a provincial Russian town with a long past.

Fortress-era centre
The historic core sits on raised ground near the river, where the original fortress once stood, and streets spread outward from this area.
River crossings
Several bridges link the districts on each bank, short strokes across the water that tie the town’s two halves together on the map.
