Livry-Gargan lies in Seine-Saint-Denis, east of Paris, and its map is dominated by a long main road running through the town from southwest to northeast. This is the historic route toward Meaux, and the town's streets branch off it on both sides, filling the land with a fine pattern of residential plots, many of them detached houses built as the suburb grew in the twentieth century.
The name joins two older places: Livry, a village with a medieval abbey, and Gargan, a later residential area. The writer Madame de Sévigné spent long periods at the Abbey of Livry, where her uncle was abbot, and wrote many of her letters there. Parts of the former Forest of Bondy still survive as green spaces nearby.
