Lobeda is part of Jena in Thuringia and sits in the Saale valley south of the city centre. From above, it has two distinct halves. The old village core keeps its small, irregular lanes, while the large post-war housing estates beside it are laid out as long, repeated slab blocks set in open space.
The Saale runs along the valley floor next to the district, with a railway line and main roads following the same corridor. Steep wooded slopes rise to the east, and the ruins of the Lobdeburg castle stand on the hillside above. Jena University Hospital also has its main site here, and its large buildings add another block of density to the valley.
A Lobeda map poster captures an unusual contrast in one frame: a medieval village plan, a modernist residential district and a narrow river valley enclosed by hills.
