Long Island in the Bahamas is aptly named. It is a narrow strip of limestone that stretches across the Tropic of Cancer, often only a few kilometres wide. The east coast faces the deep Atlantic and is rocky and exposed. The west coast opens onto the shallow, pale banks of the Bahamas. On a map the two shores look quite different, even though the land between them is narrow.
One road, the Queen's Highway, runs almost the whole length of the island and links a chain of small settlements. Near Clarence Town, on the southern half, is Dean's Blue Hole. It is among the deepest known blue holes in the world, a sheer vertical shaft in a sheltered cove that has drawn freedivers to the island for years.
