Los Ángeles is the capital of Biobío Province in southern-central Chile, founded in the eighteenth century as a Spanish frontier settlement. On a map, its centre shows the classic colonial plan: a regular grid of square blocks around a central Plaza de Armas. Beyond the grid, newer neighbourhoods spread outward across the flat land of the central valley.
The town sits among farmland and forestry country, with rivers draining west from the Andes toward the Pacific. The Laja and Biobío rivers flow nearby, and the Salto del Laja waterfall lies a short distance to the north. On clear days the snow-capped Antuco volcano is visible to the east.
