Loughborough sits in the Soar valley in northern Leicestershire, and its map is organised by a handful of strong lines. The River Soar and the Loughborough Navigation run along the eastern side of town, the Midland Main Line cuts north to south, and the older market centre lies west of them, with streets converging on the market place. Further west, the pattern opens out into the university grounds.
Loughborough University occupies one of the largest single-site campuses in the country, a landscape of halls, sports fields and tracks that reads on paper as a broad field of open space and curving paths.
