Loures lies just north of Lisbon and is the seat of a municipality that stretches from the edge of the capital into rural country. The town sits in the valley of the Trancão river, where a broad floodplain, the várzea, is still largely farmed. On the map this open, flat ground contrasts clearly with the dense districts on the surrounding hills.
The street pattern follows the landform. The older core gathers near the valley floor, while newer neighbourhoods climb the slopes with curving roads and stepped blocks. Main roads and motorways run through the valley toward Lisbon, Odivelas and the north, adding strong diagonal lines across the softer residential pattern.
