Luleå sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the Lule River on the Gulf of Bothnia, and on a map water surrounds it on nearly every side. The centre is a regular grid of blocks on the narrow headland. Bridges reach out to islands and suburbs, and harbours and bays push into the built-up area.
The town was moved to its present site in 1649, because the land, still rising after the last Ice Age, was leaving the original harbour stranded. The old settlement, Gammelstad, survives upriver as a UNESCO-listed church town. More than four hundred small wooden cottages cluster there around a medieval stone church.
Offshore lies the Luleå archipelago, with more than a thousand islands, and in winter the frozen sea carries marked ice roads.
