Luohe grew up where the Sha River and the Li River meet, and that junction sets the whole plan. From above, the two waterways close together into one broad channel that runs east. The built-up districts sit on the land between and around them. On a map the rivers read as the city's spine, a pale ribbon among the finer lines of streets on either bank.
Past the riverbanks the ground is almost perfectly flat, part of the wide plain of central Henan. With no hills in the way, the newer districts are laid out as a regular grid of long avenues and large blocks. Railway lines and expressways cut straight through at an angle. Luohe has long been a transport junction, and the rail corridor shows up as a firm, unbroken stroke across the sheet.
Luohe is known across China as a food-processing centre, home to some of the country's largest meat and packaged-food producers. It also has ties to Xu Shen, the Han-dynasty scholar who compiled the Shuowen Jiezi, one of the earliest Chinese character dictionaries. Rail corridor
Luohe sits on a major north–south railway, and the tracks and yards cut a long diagonal through the urban fabric. The line is one of the plan's strongest graphic features.
