Luuq is a town in the Gedo region of southwestern Somalia, on the Jubba River. It is known above all for its setting: the old town occupies a peninsula formed by a sharp meander of the river, so water encloses it on most sides. This natural moat made Luuq a defensible site and helped it serve as a trading point for the surrounding region.
On a map the shape is unmistakable. The Jubba sweeps around the town in a near-circle, and the streets inside the bend form a compact, irregular grid that fills the enclosed land. Settlement has since spread beyond the neck of the peninsula, but the river loop remains the defining outline. Fields follow the riverbanks, and drier open country lies further away.
