Maasin is the capital of Southern Leyte and sits on the province's western coast, where the land rises quickly from the shore. From above, the town centre forms a dense strip along the waterfront, with a port, a coastal road and a small grid of streets. Behind it, the terrain climbs into green hills, and barangays spread out along roads that follow the coast and the valleys.
The city is the seat of a Catholic diocese, and its cathedral stands in the town centre. On a Maasin map poster, the sharp line of the coast is the strongest element.
