Magdalena de Kino lies in northern Sonora, in the valley of the Magdalena River, about an hour's drive south of the border at Nogales. The town follows the valley floor. Its traditional centre of plazas and churches sits near the river, and newer neighbourhoods extend along the highway and onto the surrounding desert slopes.
The town is closely tied to Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, the Jesuit missionary and mapmaker who founded missions across the Pimería Alta. He died here in 1711. His remains were rediscovered in the 1960s and are displayed at a memorial on the main plaza. Each October the feast of San Francisco brings pilgrims from both sides of the border.
