Mahates is a town and municipality in the Colombian department of Bolívar, in the flat Caribbean lowlands inland from Cartagena. The town itself is a modest grid of blocks around a central square, and its streets fade quickly into open pasture and farmland. Across the wider municipality the land is low and wet in places, and marshes and channels show as scattered pale shapes on the map.
To the south, the municipality reaches the Canal del Dique, the long waterway that links the Magdalena River with the Bay of Cartagena. Mahates also includes San Basilio de Palenque, a village founded by people who escaped slavery and recognised by UNESCO for its language, music and traditions. Many visitors pass through Mahates on the way there.
