Mahembe lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the steep country that drops toward Lake Kivu. From above there is little that resembles a conventional town plan. Homes and small clusters of buildings are spread along ridges and slopes, joined by roads and footpaths that bend to follow the contours rather than cutting straight across them.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and this landscape shows why. Valleys fold closely into one another, their slopes worked into fields, and the paths that link homesteads trace the land's shape in fine, looping lines. On paper the result looks almost like a contour drawing.
