Maio is one of the Sotavento islands of Cabo Verde, lying east of Santiago. It is among the flattest and least populated islands in the archipelago, roughly rounded in outline, with low hills in the interior and a coast lined largely with sand. From above, the map is open and uncluttered, with a few roads linking small villages around the island.
The main town, Vila do Maio, sits in the southwest. It was historically known as Porto Inglês, after the English ships that loaded salt here, and extensive salt pans still lie beside the town. Maio's long beaches and dunes are also important nesting grounds for sea turtles.
